Psion Teklogix has been supplying its 9150 Wireless Gateway to a number of markets requiring a ruggedized, industrial 802.11b access solution – including warehouse and distribution, transportation, ports and container yards and cold storage applications.

The Challenge:

Psion Teklogix needed to upgrade and cost reduce the 9150 - adding 802.11 a/b/g capabilities and multiple radio support plus the latest features including 802.1x, WPA2 (802.11i and AES), WDS, load balancing, multiple SSIDs/BSSIDs and Virtual Wireless Networks (VWNs), and management via SNMP and web browser interface, all while retaining its unique product identity and industrial feature set including IP-42 moisture resistance, EH0002 vibration rating, ruggedized enclosure, extended operating temperature, and multiple options for antennae. Furthermore, Psion Teklogix needed to lauch this new product, combined with worldwide regulatory certifications, and low-cost yet flexible OEM manufacturing with a path to RoHS compliance, all with a very short time-to-market.

“By leveraging its Pronghorn platform, ADI delivered on a very aggressive development and manufacturing program for the new 9160,” said Thierry Beclin, Director of Product Management at Psion Teklogix. “We are pleased to count ADI as both a technology provider and a manufacturing partner for the 9160.”

The Solution:

ADI’s Pronghorn 802.11 OEM Application Platform provided the ideal starting point for the 9160 design. Pronghorn already provided nearly all the features required for the 9160, so basing the new product on Pronghorn resulted in a significant design NRE savings, cost reduction and time to market advantage for Psion Teklogix. In only eight weeks, ADI delivered functionally validated first articles of the custom 9160 main board.

Similarly, the Wi-Fi pre-certified 802.11 firmware stacks for Pronghorn from Devicescape provided an excellent starting point for the 9160 firmware. Devicescape customized the pre-existing Wi-Fi application stack for Pronghorn to implement a differentiated firmware solution for the 9160 at a fraction of the cost and time a fully custom solution otherwise would require.

The 9160 is in full-scale volume OEM production.
