More Information

Pronghorn Metro SBC is a high-performance, extended temperature, high-power wireless router board for WISPs, OEMs and system integrators building infrastructure equipment serving metro wireless, public safety wireless and WISP applications. Pronghorn Metro SBC offers a number of unique industry-leading features that provide a real edge to WISPs: a clear path to system-level Part 15 compliance, 6.5W of continuous power available to all MiniPCI slots simultaneously, spread spectrum clocking of the CPU for up to 10dB reduction in peak noise emissions, built-in Ethernet data signal surge protection, and 1500VRMS of electrical isolation on its high-power PoE input for reduced susceptibility to surges and noise emissions while enabling compliance with critical standards including 802.3 and EN-60950 electrical safety.

ADI's Pronghorn family of wireless router boards are the only products on the market that provide a simple path to building FCC compliant multi-radio systems with real-world high-gain antennas used by WISPs. ADI and partner aCure technology have obtained a system-level FCC Part 15 certification for a complete Pronghorn Metro SBC quad-radio, dual-band 2.4/5.8 GHz system using ADI's new RM1 MiniPCI radio and high-gain antennas. Customers assembling their own systems following ADI's system assembly instructions and bill of materials are assured of full Part 15 compliance for their systems. ADI is the only wireless router board vendor in the market that has taken care of system-level FCC compliance for its customers.

Based on Intel XScale® technology, Pronghorn Metro SBC offers fully validated software support from industry leading software partners including RoamAD, Antcor, StarOS as well as popular open-source projects including Linux 2.6, MadWiFi and OpenWrt.

ADI Engineering offers turnkey Pronghorn Metro systems - assembled, tested, and pre-loaded with the partner software of your choice. Contact us for more information. ADI also offers a Pronghorn Metro SBC development kit including technical support, power supply, and cables.

Pronghorn Metro SBC Key Features
Intel® IXP425™ Network Processor at 533 MHz
64MB SDRAM, 16MB Intel® StrataFlash™
Four MiniPCI slots
  • Total of 25W of power available to the four slots at any combination of 3.3V or 5V across full rated Power over Ethernet input voltage range
  • 25W of MiniPCI power allows Pronghorn Metro to be configured with any combination of four MiniPCI radios - high-power 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, 3.5 GHz and WiMAX - operating in any mode
  • Accommodates up to 80mm long, 6.5 Watt power consumption MiniPCI radios in all four slots (Ubiquiti XR series and Wavesat Evolve WiMAX series consume 6.5W during transmit)
  • All four slots have independent power distribution planes on the board, with per-slot RF filtering and decoupling, to reduce or eliminate conducted interference between radios
Complete System-Level FCC Part 15 Compliance
  • Customers building and operating systems in accordance with our assembly instructions and bill of materials achieve automatic FCC Part 15 compliance
  • Pronghorn Metro's system-level FCC approval allows one to four ADI Engineering RM1 MiniPCI radios with enhanced FCC modular approval, 12 dBi 2.4 GHz antennas, and 22 dBi 5.8 GHz antennas
  • ADI is able to add new antenna types and make other changes to our certification to suit specific customer needs
  • Complete system-assembly instructions will be added to our website shortly - in the meantime please contact us for more information
CE noise compliance
Spread spectrum clocking of IXP425, SDRAM and PCI
  • Pronghorn Metro SBC is the only quad-slot IXP425-based wireless router board on the market using spread spectrum clocking
  • Drastically reduces Pronghorn Metro SBC's noise emissions - up to 10dB lower peak emissions compared to competitive products
  • One factor that allows Pronghorn Metro to pass FCC and CE noise emissions requirements even without an enclosure, shielding, or filtering of I/O and power lines
Power Inputs
  • Two versions of Pronghorn Metro SBC are available: Pronghorn Metro SBC-24: 24V (17-30V range), and Pronghorn Metro SBC-48: 48V (36-60V range)
  • Two primary power inputs: 2.5mm coaxial power jack and high-power Power Over Ethernet input, both with 1500VRMS electrical isolation (required for compliance to EN60950-1 electrical safety requirements and IEEE 802.3)
  • Primary power inputs include inrush current limiting, overcurrent protection, undervoltage lockout, common-mode and differential filtering, surge suppression and reverse polarity protection
  • Auxiliary Power I/O Connector: Provides a 5V power output for in-cabinet Ethernet copper-fiber media converters or other accessories, also allows 5V powering of board and easy connection of battery backup solutions
Dual surge protected 10/100 Ethernet ports, Auto-MDIX
  • 1500VRMS isolation per IEEE 802.3 and EN60950-1
  • Active surge suppressors on Ethernet data pairs rated at 72V bidirectional clamping voltage, repetitive surge rating 150A (2x10us or 8x20us) pulses
Compact Flash socket (True IDE mode)
On-board hardware watchdog
Temperature and voltage monitor
LED indicators (7 total): Status, Per-Radio Status/Activity Indicators (WLAN 0-3), Ethernet (ETH 0-1)
RS-232 port (male DB-9 connector)
GPIO connector for cover open tamper detect switch or other user-defined functionality
All four MiniPCI slots and the Compact Flash socket are located on one side of the main board opposite the digital electronics
  • Access is greatly improved over router boards with front and back radios - all four radios are accessible without removing the router board from its enclosure for assembly, maintenance and upgrade
  • MiniPCI slots are placed opposite the digital components and are shielded by multiple plane layers, improving RF performance of the radios
  • Placing the radios all on one side results in half the amount of localized radio heating of the main board compared to competitive products with front and back radios - resulting in lower operating temperatures
Extended operating temperature: -40C to +80C, with 100% extended temperature certified components
RoHS compliant
20-pin JTAG connector for IXP425
