With the RM1 MiniPCI radio module, ADI is blazing a new trail to easy and inexpensive FCC compliance for real-world WISP systems using high-gain antennas and multiple radios. The fact is that nearly all open-architecture wireless systems for WISPs, OEMs and mesh operators until now have clearly violated FCC Part 15. There have been no MiniPCI radios with modular approvals allowing high-gain antennas typically used in real-world outdoor Wi-Fi applications. Until now, WISPs have been forced to choose between complex and expensive testing to achieve certification, or operating their systems in violation of US federal law and hoping. Given the significant costs associated with certification of multi-radio, multi-band systems, many WISPs have chosen to ignore Part 15.

ADI is offering a bold new path to compliance that changes everything. By offering a clear, simple and inexpensive system-level FCC legal solution for open architecture wireless products, ADI is enabling WISPs to achieve off-the-shelf compliance. ADI is the first and only manufacturer of open-architecture hardware to take the bold step of providing a system-level compliance solution. Systems built with the RM1 and ADI Engineering wireless router boards as specified in our assembly manual will be FCC compliant. The RM1 is a key part of the solution.

The RM1 represents a new type of MiniPCI radio that is optimized for FCC compliance. The RM1 is the industry's first and only MiniPCI radio with a modular Part 15 approval allowing high-gain antennas typically used by WISPs - up to 12dBi at 2.4 GHz and 22dBi at 5.8 GHz currently. Up to four RM1's can be co-located on our Pronghorn Metro SBC wireless router board, and each RM1 can be set with complete flexibility for the 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz bands.

Software agnostic compliance is another pioneering approach taken by ADI in the RM1. Past attempts at FCC compliance of open architecture equipment have required special FCC versions of software. Since conventional MiniPCI radios respond to commands to tune to non-FCC frequencies, past attempts have required the modification of application software to eliminate any non-FCC configuration options. This has placed a tremendous burden on software providers.

ADI takes a fundamentally different approach: The RM1 automatically enforces its own FCC compliance. Commands that would result in non-compliance are simply ignored, with an error code returned to the calling routine. The RM1 handles compliance where it should be handled - within the radio itself, not the application software. The result is that the RM1's certification is completely software agnostic, and compliant systems using the RM1 can run any software package without limit - no special FCC version of software is required.

The RM1 is available from ADI's authorized distributors, or directly from ADI for high-volume OEM, system integrator, or WISP applications. Contact us for more information.
